Honeybees and the Fibonacci Sequence

In the year 1202, Leonardo of Pisa came out with Liber Acci, a mathematic book explaining arithmatic and number sequences. The Fibonacci Sequence is the following: 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 ,13, 21 etc. The formula for calculating these number are F_n = F_{n-1} + F_{n-2},\!\,

These numbers are then used to derive the Golden Ratio. The Golden Ratio is 1:1.618. It appears naturally in almost all aspects of life: petals on a rose, family trees in bunnies, body ratio’s in humans. It is said that people that are considered ‘naturally beautiful’ have a face and body that follows the golden ratio. Both the Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio appear in Honeybees.

The Fibonacci numbers are very well represented in honeybees. For example, the if you follow the family tree of honeybees, it follows the fibonacci sequence perfectly. If you taken any hive and follow this pattern, it would look like this:

If you divide the number of female bees by the number of males bees you get 1.618, the golden ratio. This mathematical sequence work for any honeybee hive at any give time. Commonly, honeybee hives are always used to explain the Fibonacci Sequence and Golden Ratio. For more information please click the link below.

  2. The Fn= Fn-1+Fn-2 formula does not appear to work

It works with the 8 to arrive at 13, only

    Have I missed something

  4. Ah, so this is the fact which Dan Brown misinterpreted in The da Vinci Code as implying that the ratio of “female to male bees” in a hive is always phi. That would indeed be mysterious. The truth, however, is not.

  5. Uncountable Blessings (Surat an-Nahl/chapter the Bees; Quran 16:18) “And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them.”

  6. 16 paired surah inside quran and golden ratio

Bees with 16 pairs of chromosome:
“Bees have a different number of chromosomes. Females, workers and queens have 32, 16 are contributed by the queen’s eggs and 16 come from the drones sperm. Since drones hatch from unfertilized eggs, they only have the 16 chromosomes that were in the egg. Drones are haploid because they only have one set of chromosomes.”
