Members of the Bee Laboratory welcomed Finn Longinotto of Global Bees, along with a small crowd of other associates, into the lab a couple of weeks ago to show off the hives and share our mutual love of bees and their health. Global Bees’ mission is “to inspire, educate, and build principles and practices to contribute toward ecologically sustainable communities and economies in developing societies,” a mission that a growing university lab can greatly appreciate. Using the industrious image of the bee, Global Bees establishes and supports community sustainability programs ranging from Haiti to Vietnam to Benin and even here in DC. Project Buzz specifically focuses on promoting the health of bees and slowing their decline across the world. Attending were members of DC’s environmental departments, bee keeping educators, and international conservationists all buzzing about our bees. The group toured the 17 hives of the roof and curiously inspected the other two observation hives inside before sitting down with some of our researchers.
